Here in Doha we get to enjoy the American custom of Halloween. It is difficult to avoid the celebration as it is prominent and quite a topic of school yard discussion. Accordingly, I got into the swing and geared myself up for a night of fright. Unfortunately, I had not planned on frightening my own daughter so much that she spent over half an hour hidden in a cupboard, she only came out once her father came home and I took up residence in my fright spot outside. Needless to say, I got to sit on my gluteus maximus for the evening as Ross did the "not dressed-up" job of walking the child around the compound. I did feel rewarded as the children only approached me with trepidation and gently accepted their treat from me. It was a good night and we are thankful that the compound has an organised system - only homes displaying a notice for Halloween are to be approached, this makes it simple for households to opt out.
